BREAKING: Former Golden Lions and Blue Bulls lock beaten to death in his own bar in Perpignan

French and South African rugby is in disarray after reports have come in of the death of Barend Britz following an attack at his bar in Perpignan on Thursday night.

Britz owned his own bar, ‘Bar and Britz’ in a popular nightspot in Perpignan and according to French media he was attacked by a man who attempted to wreck the bar, throwing chairs and parts of crushed windows.

After trying to calm proceedings down, Britz was struck several times on the head and sustained injuries that he was unable to recover from.

A man in his 30s has been arrested since the horrific attack and is in police custody.

His former club Perpignan tweeted the following:

“The president of the USAP, coaches, players and all USAP personnel have learned with great sadness of the passing of BAREND BRITZ, a former iconic player in our club. We offer our most sincere condolences to his family.”
