Having led England out 59 times as captain and winning three grand slams with his country (1991, 1992 & 1995), Eddie Jones has employed Will Carling prior to the start of England’s autumn international fixtures.

Before England kick off there autumn campaign against South Africa on Saturday Eddie Jones will hope that Carling can “add value” in his new role by developing the leadership skills of England’s senior players, especially co-captains Hartley and Farrell.

“He joins the great past of England to the present,” said Jones.

“It is similar to what the All Blacks have done with great players and I think Will can play a role for us.

Because I’m not English, I can’t preach to the players about having pride in England, I’ve always thought we have possibly had a gap in that area.

Will understands what made English rugby great so combining the skill of leadership with the knowledge of English history is a nice resource for us to have.”

It is believed that Carling could continue his role until The Rugby World Cup next year if the ex-centre can prove his worth and make a success of the role.
