Scottish born Finn Russell played an integral role in getting his new side, Racing 92, off to a flyer in there Top 14 opener. Russell is known by many to possess flare and excitement within his game and he certainly didn’t let the occasion get to him when Racing took on French giants Toulon.
The stand off, who was making his competitive debut for his new club, bagged himself 2 tries as well as kicking over a further 10 points during the game. This handsome tally of 20 points proved important for his team as they went on to beat their opponents 25-9.
A lovely inside ball nearly put teammate Juan Imhoff over the line in the first 40 before Russell went on to score two tries of his own in the second 40, including a brilliant solo effort which gave his side the lead that they required.
This dominant performance from Russell will fill him with confidence for the season and if he continues to produce similar games for the remainder of the season then he will likely become a favourite amongst the French supporters.
As well as confidence from his own game, Russell can also take confidence from what fellow fly half and British and Irish Lion Jonny Sexton had to say about his move to France:
“He’s obviously a top quality player and the style of rugby they play there will really suit him; Finn obviously loves to play what he sees and throw the ball around.”
All eyes will be on Russell to see if he can continue this form in domestic rugby an in internationals for Scotland that begin on 3rd November away to Wales.
