Ireland man Joe Schmidt is now one of the most likely candidates to take over the Head Coach position in the All Blacks set up when Hansen leaves.
Steve Hansen is set to leave the Kiwis after the 2019 World Cup in Japan, and the NZRU have revealed that they have made sure to stay in very close contact with the Ireland boss since they began to consider their options.
Schmidt is one of the few Head Coaches of recent that has had the pleasure of coming out victorious over the All Blacks, making him a perfect option to become Hansen’s successor when the time comes. “You’d have to ask Joe if he wants to apply for the job, but he’s obviously a very good coach,” said NZ Rugby Union chief executive Steve Tew; so as far as things go, the position is still wide open.
Although, it would not be unlikely for Schmidt to take the job, with there not being many options better than the Ireland spot, and the All Blacks one is one of them. However, the New Zealand born boss is not alone in the contention for the place; with both Gatland and Eddie Jones being out of contract post World Cup; making for some interesting reshuffles in the international scene.
Who would you choose to take over the Kiwi opening?
