Australia’s Ben Barba has made headlines again following his reaction to his 12 game ban in the NRL for testing positive for cocaine. The 27 year old has managed to avoid the ban by switching codes to join the Top14 side Toulon.
Although most situations like this would be a lot more complicated; down to contracts with the NRL stopping players from leaving as they please, “Ben does not have a contract with the NRL so he is free to make a decision to play in a different code with a new club,” NRL CEO Todd Greenberg told BBC Sport. This loophole has turned out pretty handy for Ben considering his lengthy ban for the use of the class A drug.
The former Cronulla Sharks man will only have to see out his ban if he switches back to League, due to the two codes being classed as two different sports.
Even with the technicality of the two being different sports, do you think that Barba should still face some consequences for his actions?
