Warren Gatland has ordered his Wales players to lose weight ahead of their tour to New Zealand this summer.

The Kiwi boss wants his squad to trim down so they are better equipped to deal with the breakneck speed of the world champions in the three-Test series.

Wales are renowned as one of the most physical teams on the planet and do not lack for bulk throughout their entire line-up.

But Gatland is wary of the lightning pace throughout the All Blacks ranks, their high skill level and ability to counter-attack in devastating fashion.

He has therefore ordered his front-line players not to report for duty carrying an ounce of excess weight.

And the gigantic quantities of food the squad were munching through ahead of the World Cup are likely to be reduced.

“We work quite closely with the nutrition when we’re in camp and they will want some of us to be a kilo or two lighter because we’re playing New Zealand, and there’s going to be a lot more running,” revealed Wales and Lions flanker Dan Lydiate.
