The WRU say any Welsh player selected for the Great Britain Olympics Sevens squad will go with their blessing, amid reports that Justin Tipuric and James Davies are in the frame for Rio.

The openside duo are understood to be seen as prime candidates to join the GB team for the Games, which will take place in Brazil from August 5-21.

Ospreys star flanker Tipuric played one season for Wales Sevens in 2009-10, while his speed and superb footballing skills make him ideally suited for the reduced version of the sport.

Uncapped Scarlets’ openside Davies, the younger brother of Lions centre Jonathan, has a strong Sevens background, having represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games.

It may be that the back row pair would have to forego Wales’ three-Test tour of New Zealand this summer in order to go to the Olympics.

That’s because two GB Sevens teams will compete in four international tournaments during June and July as preparation for Rio.
