Proposals are on the table for a radical shake-up of the Guinness Pro12 which could see the competition expanded and split into two conferences.

There is a growing feeling among the powers-that-be that matches need to be moved out of international windows so that the star names are absent less of the time.

To achieve that, there would either have to be a reduction in the number of teams or a switch to a conference system, amid an increase in the sides competing.


There have been calls in some quarters for the two struggling Italian outfits – Treviso and Zebre – to be ditched from the league.

But it seems that expansion and conferences is the more favoured option, which will inevitably increase speculation about London Welsh and London Scottish coming on board.

There is a consultation process going on at the moment, but it seems there is a growing consensus in the corridors of power that moving games outside of the international window is the way forward.
