BRISTOL are set for a messy battle with the Rugby Football Union over Steve Borthwick, after the governing body announced the forwards coach was joining Eddie Jones’ England staff – without the club’s permission.

Bristol have vowed they will “take all reasonable actions” to “protect the club’s position”, after Borthwick walked out on them little more than one month after arriving.

The RFU’s announcement today that they had appointed Borthwick as forwards coach came as a genuine shock to Bristol, who, earlier in the day, had rejected his resignation.

Bristol are understood to have been holding out for suitable terms of release: namely appropriate compensation, the opportunity for Borthwick to stay with them until the conclusion of the GKIPA Championship play-offs in May, and time to find a top-quality replacement.
