WATCH: Brilliant timelapse video shows how the Millennium Stadium pitch was transformed
The new hybrid pitch at the Millennium Stadium has been shown off for the first time ahead of this weekend’s Autumn internationals.
The controversial palletised pitch has been torn up and replaced with a new hybrid pitch where artificial fibres are attached to real grass turf.
The £3.1m Desso Grassmaster pitch has 21 million artificial turf fibres sewn into the natural grass to form a stable pitch that can take three times as much playing as a normal grass pitch. The 86,400km of fibres could stretch around the world twice.
The replacement project began at the end of May and last month. Two giant sewing machines arrived at the stadium to begin the process of injecting the artificial fibres into the ground.
It has been part-funded by the Welsh Government in a bid to attract major events to Wales.
