Six Nations 2014 Round 1 saw three contrasting matches.  France’s late win over England was the highlight of the round and not just for French fans!  Wales were made to work hard to beat a determined Italian side, while Scotland were back to their worst and Ireland deservedly took advantage to win comfortably.

2014 RBS Six Nations Rugby Championship Launch 22/1/2014

Six Nations is difficult with all teams having a standing start without warm up matches, but Scotland fans will be hoping that their team hits the ground running if they are to avoid the wooden spoon.

In such a short competition it is difficult to lose your first game and then win the series, although this can be done!  England’s chances have taken a major hit, leaving Wales, France and Ireland with an early jump on the field.  Both Ireland and France will be relieved after finishing out of contention last season.

In the Super Rugby Tips competition, most people picked two winners with the late France win separating the cats from the pigeons.  Only 39 percent of SuperBru tipsters picked France to beat England, while most tipsters thought Wales would beat Italy by a higher margin and Scotland would put up more of a fight against Ireland.

After Six Nations 2014 Round 1 Wales are still looking like favourites, although they will need to raise their game given that Ireland won so well against Scotland and France and England are still contenders.  One thing is for sure, you will be a brave man to pick Scotland to win the Six Nations after their performance!
