Continuing on in our top 10 series, this time we take a look at the 10 best hookers in rugby right now and rank them based on current form.

10. Sebastien Bruno

The former France hooker may no longer be turning out for his national side, but he is still a vital player for Toulon. His experience at the very top level has clearly made a huge impact in the Top 14 Champions front row and it’s fair to say his throwing isn’t too bad either.

9. Guihem Guirado

Narrowly beating out Bruno to 9th sport is current French incumbent Guihem Guirado. Whilst he may not have had the most successful of seasons for club or country Guirado has looked like one of the more consistent performers in both sides.

8. Stephen Moore

Had it not been for his recent injury problems Moore probably would have been further up this list. It seems he has really stepped up since the change in the Wallabies coaching set-up leading to him being selected as Wallabies captain prior to his injury setback.

7. Rory Best

Just over a year ago Best looked set to miss out on the Lions tour until indiscipline from Dylan Hartley cost him his place. Best has since stepped up his game again becoming an integral player for Ireland.

6. Schalk Brits

Brits seems to be a hugely underrated player outside of the Premiership. Whilst he has now finally been recognised by the Springboks had he been playing in South Africa there’s no doubting he would have been challenging for a starting spot.

5. Adrian Strauss

Despite the Cheetahs having a pretty terrible Super Rugby season, their captain Adrian Strauss was a rock throughout helping provide his side with plenty of go forward and on-field leadership resulting in the Bulls snapping him up in the off-season.

4. Richard Hibbard

It was not so long ago that Hibbard could barely get a sniff in at the Welsh set up. How things have changed as he has become one of the most sought after hookers in world rugby and looks set to become a key man in Gloucester’s ‘revolution’ this season.

3.Dane Coles

Coles may not be the flashiest of hookers in the world, but he is absolutely solid for the All Blacks. A key man in their front row if he can stay injury free next season there’s no doubting he will be hugely influential during the World Cup.

2. Dylan Hartley

Hartley has bounced back from the disappointment of missing out on the 2013 Lions tour for both club and country. It seems he is finally tempering his aggression which has resulted in him reclaiming his starting spot for England.

1. Bismarck du Plessis

Bismarck may not have had his best game recently against Argentina but that shouldn’t take away from what a fantastic couple of seasons he’s had for club and country. An absolutely massive player for the Springboks who’s going to take some displacing.

Who do you think is the best lock in the world right now?

  1. Not buying into the Richard Hibbard hype….

  2. stephen moore up to 4, Creevy in at 9 and take hibbard out……..then you have yourself a list

  3. Tatafu Polota-Nau deserves a place, he’s neck and neck with Stephen Moore

  4. Dane Coles not flashy? The man is all flash! When he first made the All Blacks the doubts were over whether or not he could do the tight stuff to match fancy passes and side steps

  5. Yeah just take the not out of the ‘may not be the flashiest’ in the Dane Coles section

  6. You could not possibly leave out Agustin Creevy?

  7. Since when do hookers need to be flashy to be good? I am more of an old fashioned guy when it comes to hooker. I love the tough as nails breed of hookers Bismarck Du Plessis. Dylan Hartley. Stephan Moore. Hibbard

  8. Hibbard needs loads more work, he has terrible hands and is always off his feet
