Super Rugby 2014 started with an upset 21-20 victory for the Lions over the Cheetahs courtesy of a last minute drop goal to Marnitz Boshoff which has set the cat amongst the pigeons in the South African conference. The Sharks on the other hand scored a comfortable bonus point win 31-16 over the Bulls to confirm their position as South African favourites.
The Cheetahs faithful will be disappointed following their defeat given that they will have seen the Lions as a match they could claim the points from, but Boshoff had other ideas as he held his nerve better than his opposite Elgar Watts who missed a late penalty. This match will hardly go down as a great spectacle as a typical early season game, but the Lions fans won’t mind, especially given their predicted struggles in Super Rugby 2014! Boshoff’s 21 points makes him a player worth considering in fantasy rugby competitions.
The Sharks won comfortably against the Bulls 31-16 with Patrick Lambie stamping his class on this game with a try, two conversions and three penalties. The home team was helped by a helpful TMO decision to award Cobus Reinach a first half try from a knock-on. Conditions were greasy with high humidity for this match and so when Lambie crossed for his team’s fourth try and a bonus point, the home fans were satisfied.
The Bulls fought hard and improved in the second half with the help of the experienced Victor Matfield. His experience will be crucial for the young Bulls pack.
In SuperBru only 12 percent of tipsters picked the Lions to beat the Cheetahs and over 80 percent picked the Sharks to beat the Bulls. There was no Grand Slam Point available in Round 1 because there were only two matches so Slur664 takes the lead as one of only three tipsters to pick the Lions. Well done!
